Before you begin reading this article, I must warn you. I was trying
to browse up and read these things on Wikipedia and several other unnamed sites
and ended up getting more than a little bored and a bit confused.
This represents my view and understanding from the various
perspectives I've gleaned at.
You know how several people can bake the same type of cake and it'll
taste different? This is kind of what it's like.
Have a bite.
In many foreign countries, eg. The U.S.A. there are usually at least
two sides to a national perspective.
The Democrats and The Republicans.
The two sides who more or less believe in the same thing but in
different ways. If you don't understand what I mean by that look at it this
way; two people can aim to arrive at the same destination but believe in very
different ways of getting there.
There are, however, at LEAST two very big and blatantly obvious
problems with this;
1. The terms democracy and republic (as well as their derivatives)
are often misrepresented, and even more often, incorrectly used
interchangeably.
2. There are several political standpoints which exist besides these
two, and exist even in the minds of many of the countries that have adopted the
two i mentioned earlier.
Now I'm no expert on differential political disciplines and
ideologies. Also - The aim of this article isn't to address every ideology that
exists or even to go headlong (or neckdeep or any body-measure you like) into a
discussion of democracy or republicanism.
Though there ARE some things I'll be asking like; How come a lot of
still erroneously refer to the "Republic of Nigeria" as a
"Democracy"
Lets take the following sentence into consideration...
"Don't you know we live in a democracy?"
I’m sure you've heard that or a similar sentence sometime in your
life if you're at least 12 years old or thereabout.
It was especially used today(yesterday) when i was talking with a
few people in the cafeteria while we were watching the swearing in ceremony of
our (Nigerians - I mean) new president. So these two particular ladies, during
the course of our discussion said that I was against the progress of Nigeria
because they believed I was "Anti-Buhari".
Honestly. Who could dare be against our new president😏.......like
seriously.... . I, being a peaceful person, and having served in various
leadership positions over the course of my lifetime have learnt quite a few
things. It is NOT easy to be a leader. For real. This is actually no joke.
There are logistical, systematic and people-made bottlenecks in virtually
EVERYTHING. People will be against you in everything you do as much as they
will also be with you. Negativity can do a lot to depress a leader. Most people
would oppose you for these major reasons
- They don't see things the way you do
- They don't have confidence in you because
you have a bad or inexistent track record.
- The plans you're making do not explicitly
favor them.
- The plans you're making favor the people
they don't like.
- They do not like the plans you're making
or just don't want you to be the one making them.
- They don’t like what you represent or
what you are associated with.
- They just do NOT like you.
It's ridiculous that people would spend so much time just bashing
people and painting them black without ever attempting to look at the
positives. There IS such a thing as CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. Which most people
these days seem to avoid having the mind frame of. Honestly. Minds clouded with
hate can do nothing except steal, destroy and tarnish.
The truth is; sometimes if you do NOT look for positives you just
will NOT see them.
I like Jonathan. That's true. But it doesn't mean i hate Buhari.
Logic doesn’t ALWAYS fall into the black and white spectrum. And we must learn
to look beyond even the grey. In case you DIDN'T know - we live in a multicolor
world.
People used to be all over themselves calling OBJ a crook and devil,
but today we hail him as not just a great statesman but a transformer (the
startup and allowance of the mobile telephone networks). Im not going to write
all that much more because now this article is getting very long.
Color your world with positivity. It's simply wrong and irrational
to color everything you do NOT like as 'black'. (Black isn't even a color so
there. :P )
We tend to put labels on people, calling ourselves democrats or
statesmen and yet the situation seen is the same as putting a car label on a
vegetable.
My fellow countrymen and countrywomen (Feminism!! I support), let us
be more than bitter antagonists of the truth. Let us be MORE than 'Democrats'.
Let us be who we truly are.....Let us be Nigerians.
Thanks for coming here :)

Jamie,I like this write up. It' so apt. You don't have to abandon what you believe in because people don't see from same. Perspectives as you do. What makes a man is to stand firm in and what he belie in. Sometimes the best truth comes from people you think don't like you. Our political. System. Is evolving and will get to a point where people don't see criticism as hate.ay ur ink never dy
Thanks De Chidi. You have some very good points, and I know that truth can be especially helpful from those who are not with you since they will not lie about your faults. The main problem however is getting to a stage where constructive instead of destrucive criticism rules the day...
Couldn't agree more with Chidi. The Country's political system isn't just there yet. There are more divisive factors at play than the love of the country/State/even class or association as the case may be (which has taken the backseat).Unfortunately I believe it's gonna take an awful long time for us to get past those and see something bigger than our opinions, egos and ideologies.Until that happens, we'd still keep seeing things as black or white.Good write-up sincerely!
Thanks for commenting Olumide, I appreciate the review :). I can only hope things go up from here.
