A Rule of Law or A Rule of Presidential Discretion ?

President Muhammadu Buhari
A protest, or in Pro-Buhari words, a Revolution was planned. Abduction of the Lead Convener, Sowore, by operatives of the DSS  followed suit. An application was filed before the Federal high court sitting in Abuja seeking to detain the defendant for 90 days for the conclusion of investigations was filed.

Why Saturdays used to be a no-no for my birthdays

[5 min read]

Why I didn't like my birthday on a Saturday

It doesn't matter what/how you feel about this for this is the girl I used to be, not the lady that I now am.

A few years ago, my aunt was getting married, a joyous occasion it was, everyone was happy, everyone, except me. I wasn't angry she was getting married, I was, in fact very happy for her. What I wasn't happy about however was her choice of date.

Like Me, Or Not.

I think it's ridiculous to get angry at people for not liking you the way you like them.

Whenever I talk to someone who feels that way, I ask them a simple question.

Waiting for FRIDAY

[10 min read]

Akin was a 400 level Nursing student.

Between clinical postings, preliminary project, assignments, studying to be the first best male student in his department and the self-imposed responsibility of outdoing all his senior siblings, he had no time to do the things he loved. He looked forward to the weekends when he could rest and do some of these things, but then, his weekends weren't always free too, because all his academic activities still ate into his weekends.

It was in the heat of the harmattan.

She was lying in her bathroom floor,
In the afternoon, just when it was hottest.
Only a few days after she had found her husband in arms of another,
Desperately trying to milk her for himself.

Worry

It was a cold rainy night as usual, which seemed to be occurring more frequently and we were all gathered round as we did every night. It occurred to me that we were just sad, and we were definitely not doing anything about it.

Hating Catfish

[3min Read]

One day when I was in 300 level in the university, I went to go see a potential "interest" of mine - who I had met on Facebook, in a class at the school. So I gingerly went with excitement in my heart and seeds of butterflies in my stomach. From her profile picture, and other photos I had seen, she was gorgeous. I hadn't known her for long, but I believed myself lucky - someone with a beautiful, open mind and "stunning looks". So I peeked into the class eagerly, looking for the girl I had seen in the pictures. I didn't see her. But I did see someone who could not possibly be the girl I'd been so interested in meeting.

I thought to myself, "Maybe she's late". So I sent a text, "Where are you?". Then she sent back a reply "I'm here in the class". Then she turned back to stare at me. At that moment, terror gripped my heart.

What we do for love...

[4min read]

I look at the world,
And in a spectral plain,
I see a world full of colours.
Some calm and flowing,
Some angry and swirling,
Some dark and depressing.

And one encompasses all:
Love,
Delving into the calm, warm colors,
People find peace in love;
People find joy in love;
People become happy in love;
Love can be good.

I'm sitting with my friends, at least that's how I feel sometimes. Everyone seemed to be laughing at something they saw or what someone said, and I was also laughing, but I was laughing so my insecurities wouldn't show; I was laughing so I wouldn't have to explain why I was lost.

The Sound That Changed Our Lives

 [3 min read]

My sitting partner was a big fan of soliloquy; chanting gibberish under the guise of French verbs while she scribbled invisible words on the table with an inkless pen. It was the ' mass study period', you see- a whole hour dedicated to the ever irksome task of reading- and like most of the other girls in school, I had long given up on the books spread out on my desk.

The day would have carried on as usual; I would've fallen asleep eventually, only to be awakened by a teacher with a loud slap. The letters and numbers on my math book would've swirled around in my brain until I was dizzy with algebra, and the school bell would have relieved us all with three chimes.
Nothing could have prepared us for the shrill sound we heard next.

Correct Me Not

[2min Read]
"Are you stupid? How could you throw it away?"

I've seen a lot of people abuse others (usually children) in the name of "correcting" them. I believe this loosely relates to the local common belief that whoever can shout the loudest, or beat the hardest is correct, or is the "winner". And in a society like ours, where age is more important than truth or fairness, there is little that younger people can do to "win" or correct their elders/superiors.

The Change

[4min read]

I met her on my first day and we undeniably clicked, we quickly became best friends. I met the second person a year later and I introduced them to each other. A few weeks later, I started to wonder if I had made a mistake.

We were three friends, best of friends, inseparable. At least, that was what it seemed like to people and probably my two friends. But to me, I was just a girl struggling to fit in.

Football Managers and the Change of Guard

[3 min read]
There's a chance this will be a key rivalry of the new era.
Football, a sport we have come to passionately fall in love with and which is notorious for constantly re-inventing itself has done it again!

While the obvious re-invention has to be the introduction of VAR and its ever-abiding controversies, there’s a particular process the game is currently undergoing, subtle yet pretty obvious that should have our attention.

The Shi'a-Police force clashes are not foreign to residents of the Federal Capital Territory

You probably saw on Monday, July 22nd, the gut-wrenching newsflash announcing yet another bloody clash between members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria and the Nigerian Police Force.

What made this previously familiar head-on collision particularly different was the delivery of Collateral damage in the deaths of Precious Owolabi, a graduate of performing arts from the University of Ilorin and now member of the Youth Service corps attached to Channels TV and Usman Umar, a Deputy Commissioner of Police.

Mother became an orphan that night.
The night was warm, and I was in my room relaxing from the day's work when I heard shouting from the room grandma stayed in. I sprinted to her room, trying as hard as I could to imagine positive things, pushing the negatives out of my mind...

A Piece Written for You

[3 min read]

I was seated in a car one hot afternoon when I became conscious of something warm and moist against my arm. Without looking down to confirm, I knew what it was, so I instead looked at the person, and from one look, I understood her. She is a woman, a mother and a sacrificial one at that. Her hands were filled with callouses from working too hard to make a living. There was no way she was as old as she looked; her face was etched with lines. Too many lines. I could have adjusted or moved my arm, I could have, I don't like the feeling of another person's sweat on me, still, I didn't move my arm. I just sat there and imagined her life and it humbled me.

A LETTER TO MY BEST FRIEND

[7 min read]

I remember the first day I saw you, I mean actually saw you. We had always been in the same class, but for some unknown reasons, I just never saw you.

It was visiting day, and my parents couldn't make it, because they had to travel with my sick brother for treatment, so I was really unhappy. I didn't have so many friends and my only close friend, Jane, had disappeared without a trace. I was seated at my desk, flipping through my books, looking at my test scores and trying not to feel bad for myself, when I felt a light tap on my shoulder.

African Big People

[3min read]

Hey. For the sake of this article, let’s define big people as adults and parents/ Aunties/ Uncles and all the other big people.

Now, many a times we see memes describing how African parents behave and react to certain situations and we laugh. Or those for the evil aunties who don’t mind their business. Yes, it is funny. I laugh myself. Different people have blown on different social medias due to these videos and memes that have been made on this subject matter. But while we laugh and point fingers back to certain people that we know behave in such manners, how many of us actually sit back and evaluate our own attitude?

Lessons we learnt from the Presidential debate

[5min Read]

The Presidential debate held on the evening of 19th of January, 2019 or well, something like it held.

You probably watched and enjoyed a group of intellectuals brainstorm. Another group probably was too upset about the absence of the big guns. Yet another arrived at a factual destination that this columnist arrived at a long time ago, the fact that we’re practically toast as a nation.

Others didn’t even bother. Now whether you were a glass half-full or glass-half empty sort of person is of no real worry to this columnist.

Time for some objectivity though.
