Shaft: A review

[5 min read]

The Shaft (2019) movie is the third movie in a trilogy of mindblowing crime/action movies. The men of the Shaft family have always watched over the criminal activities in Harlem, but when John Shaft the third (John Shaft Jr in the movie) moves back to Harlem after a childhood away, as his mother tried to wean him away from the footsteps of his father, he immediately falls in with his father in order to solve the murder of his best friend. His father immediately begins to teach him the ways of being a Shaft.

Of course, Shaft junior first tries to solve the murder through legal means, seeing as he was a FBI agent. But the steps he takes are seen as a nuisance and he is ultimately suspended from the force.

As they say, beside every great man is a strong woman, and Maya Babanikos proved herself to being the reason behind John Shaft II’s rule before she decided to cart junior away to avoid him being killed or ending up like his father. Also, Junior wasn’t far from the romantic action himself as he linked up with his childhood sweetheart while solving the case, and his father even tried to help him get her. A dinner between them ended up revealing how good junior was with a gun, even though he professed his hate for guns throughout the movie.

The movie came to a head when the true enemy finally became clear and the two Shaft’s went in search of Gordito who had taken Junior’s sweetheart, Sasha, hostage. On their way they went in search of firepower and here Junior was introduced to the first Shaft, his grandfather, who as we would come to learn had abandoned junior’s father while prtending to be his uncle.

There were a lot of reunions as Maya was reunited with Shaft II and all generations of the Shaft were finally together again. But the most important one was yet to come as Sasha was still in the clutches of Gordito.

While in all the old Shaft movies technology was just a dream, this edition showed the importance of technology in both committing and fighting crime, as Shaft III was well versed in the use of technology and hacking.

And, as all beautiful stories when they come to an end, the reunion was bloody and full of gore, with even old man shaft showing off some of his skills on the field.

People were injured and someone didn’t learn how to fly on time.

With a cast like that, of course, we expect nothing less than we got, with big names like Samuel L. Jackson and Regina hall, it was a splendid movie.

Out of 10 this movie is definitely a 10
