The Case - Chapter One

Chapter One:

"Mehn!! ...I ain't never seen a dull day like this, Chris" said officer Jake.
"Hand me that gun" said officer Chris.
"You wanna shoot yourself, right?"
"You know me so well".

Chris and Jake had been best friends since kindergarten, and even their parents still saw each other in their old ages. They had both entered the Police Academy at the Washington district - and after two years of cleaning guns and polishing shoes of D.A.'s, they got into the force, and had been looking for some "real action" ever since.

A robbery, a mugger trying to take an old lady's bag, a bully stealing candy from a kid, anything that would make them rise up and be known as a bunch of heroes. So far all they had gotten was a guy overspeeding. And he was just going a mile above the recommended. Of course they got in trouble for going all 'Bruce Lee' on him.

"Want a doughnut? I'm kinda getting hungry" Chris asked

"The more you eat the thinner you become.... what are you anyway?", Jake asked, incredulously.
"You're just jealous cause you hardly eat and you're a fat frog already", retorted Chris.

They'd been sitting in the car all night, and the only action they got was a cat fighting with a trash can.

Then... when it was almost 2 am, Jake spotted two shadows at an alley.

"Hey wanna check that out?", He asked.
"Check what out, your weight?" Chris snickered.
"Quit playing, I saw something or someone... I dunno"
"It's probably nothing, must be that stupid cat again ... and maybe his wife"

Suddenly they heard a scream, high pitched and feminine, from the alley.

"Still think it's nothing, or you wanna take a look?" asked Jake.
"Alright let's go".

Finally... they would get some action. Even if it was that cat they would shoot it. They ran stealthily to the side of the alley. For some reason Jake decided to pull his gun out, and cocked it loudly. Chris slapped him over the head and his cap fell off.

"Hey, just gimme the money and I'll consider leaving your body in the dumpster", said a voice.

Chris and Jake exchanged looks on hearing that. At that moment, it was the most beautiful thing anyone had ever said. They were excited to be catching real perps. Chris peeked and saw five guys. Four looked armed, and one was obviously getting robbed.

"Oh crap, we're outnumbered" Jake panicked.
"I know Mehn... four bad guys against me and humpty dumpty" Chris whispered.

"After I beat their ass I'm coming for yours" Jake responded.

Chris found a can and aimed it right at one of the guys. The impact was painless, but it alarmed them.

"Go check it out....looks like we're being followed" a voice said. He sounded like the leader.

A huge shadow came forward to the entrance of the alley, and Chris used hand signs to tell Jake what to do. The guy came out with his gun pointed at the opposite direction. The thug turned to the left, and walked a few inches to where Jake was hiding. In a swift move, Jake tripped him and grabbed the gun while he was falling. The thug's hand was on the trigger, and a bullet was fired.

Chris slapped his face in dismay.

"You fat yam tuber", he mused.

The gang rushed out. They made a run for it back to their car just at the corner of the street. They both made a dash to the side of the road, and took cover behind a wall. The bullets came out firing everywhere. Shop owners began closing immediately at the sound of gunshots. Chris admitted defeat and called for back up from the nearest department, which fortunately was only a few minutes away from their location. The gang came around and had them cornered.

"Any more ideas Sherlock Holmes?", Chris asked his partner while raising his hands.

Jake did the same.

"Let's kill them and throw them in the dumpster", one said.
"Nah, there must be reinforcement lurking around here somewhere" the leader said.

"Tell me, where are the rest of ya", he said, pointing a gun to Chris, and aiming at his forehead.

"We came alone, just leave us and we won't say a word", Jake begged.

"Of course ya won't, you ever seen a dead man talking?", said one with a strong country accent, as the leader cocked his gun.

"Looks like you're the first one to go, pretty boy"
Chris shut his eyes, and Jake watched in horror. A gun was fired.... and a second after, a body dropped down, lifeless.

But Chris.... Chris was still standing...
