2017 in a nutshell

Mary Idowu

The year 2017 started with a bang for me. Sometimes, it feels like it was just yesterday I shouted happy new year; but when the year began proper, it seemed so long and tedious and there were times when time flew and at other times when I kept watching the clock. Looking through the year now, 2017 has been very dramatic with it's highs and lows, it gave some a new lease on life and from others, it snatched quite a bit. I don't know how 2017 was for you but for me, it was a mixture of fun and annoyance. So, as the year is gradually coming to an end, here are some highlights of  2017;

Donald Trump became President:

I was part of the small percentage of people who felt like Donald Trump would become the President, yet it still came to me as a shock when I heard the news that he actually won the election. For some reasons I felt like something could still happen and Hillary would win; but when he was sworn in as the President and he moved into the white house on the 20th of January, I realized that anyone could become anything if they really want to. It is just a matter of determination, saying and doing the right things, meeting the right people and having some sort of tough skin. I mean c'mon!! The whole world was literally against the man.

Our President and the Economy:

It was this year that was assigned to our President to take sick leave(s) while in office and when  the country was in an economic brouhaha (it was probably assigned by the gods, who knows?) We heard that he had Prostate cancer which was neither confirmed nor denied. His absence rustled up a lot of political unrest; some Nigerians even believed that in his absence the economical situation became easier and that the dollar-naira ratio became more conducive for the Nigerians.

The country was too annoyed to even care that the President has Presidential rights that covered his leave(s). Somebody was even sure that he was dead and thus made an outrageous public announcement of what should happen to him if our President returned.

Now to less serious stuffs:

Nigerian twitter savegery went up a notch:

For a nation that was going through economic and political issues, Nigeria always found the best replies for Twitter trolls. I guess it was a way of venting our anger and or a distraction from our reality. If you want to tweet at Nigerians, think about it well. Here is a few of how savage the Nigerian twitter became this year:

Big shaq, wizkid and the others:

In the entertainment industry, 2017 was a good year for some and it was the year some people were called duck. It was in this same year some people became associated with credit cards and ATM cards. Some foreign artist (some don't know which country their loyalties lie) got put in their places. For Big Shaq however, he blew the year and it went skrrr raaa....pap pap pap, pap pa... Yet he says he isn't hot.

Wizkid and Davido made the country and continent proud at the MOBO awards (I honestly wasn't expecting every politician to celebrate them).

Some went from successful artists to up and coming artists

Straight outta 'friendzone':

For some, 2017 sucked them into a zone deeper than the friendzone; far into even the 'generational zone'.

For others, 2017 promoted them into the husband zone - they walked right outta the friendzone. I do not know about the hundreds of people this happened to, but I am sure we all know of how 'Mr Capable' walked capably into the husband zone. Whether the whole thing was hyped or not, it gave quite a lot of people hope and the strength or motivation to shoot their shot. And I was happy for them because love is a beautiful thing.

Haters, please let the union last o.

Shoot your shot 2017:

2017 has also witnessed the advent of ladies publicly shooting their shots, even though men are scum; even though a lot of girls do not know how to shoot properly (if you need directions on where to get the gun and how to shoot it well, read Jamike's article on how to do so). As in, you need to see the way some girls are poorly shooting their shots. Seriously though, girls are really making public effort of shooting, could it be because of Christmas? Or is there a punishment for single girls in 2018?

Statues for happiness were erected:

Despite the economic situation of the country, Imo state witnessed a year of abundance; there was more than enough money for the erection of statues for foreign dignitaries and just to increase the happiness level in the state, an office for the commissioner of happiness was put in place. It feels like Imo is a different country entirely.
Be giving people like this a reason to throw shade

As we look forward to a new beginning, it is of importance to note that every day is the beginning of a new year, thus a new beginning with new chances and opportunities. Make each day count, make 2018 count, do not be afraid to make bitter memories and not only the sweet ones, so that when you look back at those bitter memories you can laugh and learn new things.

Based on logistics, I couldn't give other highlights of 2017, please feel free to add the ones I missed in the comment section. Happy new year in advance!
