300 WRITING COMPETITION - SECOND EDITION

[2 min read]

DESOLATION
by Zainab Oluwakemi Oyeleye

A broken mind,
A shattered heart,
And a cursed life.
So was the life of Silver.

People often say that home is where the heart is,
However, she doesn’t have such a place.
Her heart is in shambles,
She is an everlasting embrace with the melancholic air that surrounds her.
And as she sits just by the window,
She drowns in the deathless sea of disappointment,
A dysphoria that has no cure.

Before she could climb the stairs of adulthood,
Raped by a man she once called her father,
Rejected by a woman she once called her mother,
Expelled from a house she once called her home,
And betrayed by man she once knew as her lover.

And as she sits in her peaceful haven,
Staring at her freshly plucked flower,
As the petals dry up and die.
Slowly and hopeless as it goes through its predestined fate,
She can’t help but feel similar to the dying flower,
An ugly, soulless and hopeless little girl.
Doomed till her fateful end.

She was so blinded by the things she lost,
That she failed to realize,
That she had found her home in her mind.
Something that would never leave her,
Or perhaps not yet.

A broken mind,
A shattered heart,
And a cursed life,
So was the life of Silver.
