Welcome to 200 level Medicine and Surgery. Here are some things you should know.
1. PEOPLE WILL LOOK DOWN ON YOU: Congrats on making it to 200 level. However, in the medical department you can't feel relaxed as failure will cost you alot. Being in the preclinical set comes with you constantly hearing statements of how you haven't seen anything hard before, or your courses are just a piece of cake compared to clinicals. These are true of course, but don't let such intimidation get to you, do your best at your present level.
2.DO NOT PROCRASTINATE: We all do this, not much to be said here, because we know the right thing to do. If you procrastinate doing assignments or studying for tests, presentations and the rest, you are only going to end up choked up or loosing marks.
3. MIND THE FRIENDS YOU FOLLOW: Yes our parents have carved this music into our ears, and they aren't wrong. Your friends greatly impart on your reasoning, morality, knowledge and patterns of life. Get to know your department members well, seniors and juniors alike. Cut off all negative ties and distractions that may affect your personal progress.
4. WATCH HOW YOU MANAGE YOUR TIME: I personally enjoy playing sports, watching movies and just relaxing. True a medical student should always be studying, but even research has shown that studying for a long range of time can be inneffective. What you do aside reading your books matters though, make sure it's rewarding and affects you positively in the long run.
5. FIND BALANCE: I haven't really mentioned reading so far. I would advice that you study when you are mentally sound, not tired or hungry, but in a focused state where nothing else is clouding your mind. Take breaks between reading for greater efficiency and during these breaks you can grab a snack, play games, nap, really whatever floats your boat. Just remember to find the balance in your life and build your drive for success .
6. KNOW AND RESPECT YOUR LECTURERS: Our lecturers are our senseis or senpai, call it what you may, but note that you being obedient and ready to learn from them will take you a long way. During classes most lecturers give tips of their exam questions, if you aren't paying attention you will miss these and so much more beneficial info. Follow up with assignments and presentations. It's just for your good.
7. STUDY AHEAD OF YOUR CLASSES:
Some courses will have topics that may confuse you. Studying ahead of time helps you already have
an idea of what will be taught. Hearing the lecturer teach will be like a revision class. So imagine
how it would be when you study the notes after the class.
8. WORK TOGETHER: Don't sly your classmates. You won't be too happy if you keep important info to yourself and only you passes alone. Team work is important in Medicine and Surgery. If you don't mind studying with people, it would be good to find a few to study with. A large group will only drag you down.
9. ADJUST TO READING LATE AT NIGHT: Some days, reading in the day may not be enough, you will need extra hours and end up doing some night studying. Plan your day in a way you won't be too tired when you want to read at night.
10. BE CLOSE TO GOD: It's never enough with just your personal effort, being prayerful is very important. It keeps you on the right track. If you're close enough to God, you may even get some hints of the exam questions before time. Also, sometimes you may be so tired and stressed, but taking a few seconds to ask God for help goes a really long way.
11. LEARN TO WRITE FAST: This would help you during jottings, tests and exams.
12. PREPARE YOUR BODY AND SOUL FOR PRESENTATIONS: At some point you will feel like you have become the teacher and it's high time you start getting paid as one. Presentations are basically you preparing for a topic and teaching your entire class what you prepared for. You will be given marks according to your performance.
13.DON'T BE TENSED BEFORE AN EXAM: It's just another exam. How many have you written before now. Do the right thing, attend classes, do assignments, study and pray. You will be alright.
things can get pretty confusing, because you are working with very little time and you have to be quick about everything. Be sure to go through all your picture slides and notes properly.
It actually feels this fast😉 |
15. BIOCHEMISTRY PRACTICALS: To be honest, Biochemistry practicals can be really stressful. If you know you will be having one that day, get enough rest and be prepared for the heat and frustrations.
16. MEDICAL SERIES: By now you must have noticed that quite a number of your friends now watch medical series, Mostly Grey's Anatomy, which, if you ask me, is mainly drama. However, you will surely learn new and useful information from them so it's a good idea. To mention a few more theres the Good Doctor, House, etc. You can recommend more in the comment section.
17. HAVE A MENTOR: A mentor is someone you look up to; a wise and trusted counsellor. It's actually not that deep. Just have at least one senior colleague who you can ask for help, notes, pretty much anything. It will really help you understand some things better.
18. PRACTICE PAST QUESTIONS:This is a very good way to reveiw what you have learnt and read. Try to be familiar with as many past questions as possible.
20. LISTEN TO ADVICE: It's as simple as it gets.
That's all for now. Feel free to drop your questions in the comment section.
